A Fable About The Magic Of Free Parking.

One of the best short films I’ve ever seen. Fantastic, creative, romantic, sweet. A parking attendant works with a validation stamp. A guy says “validate me” in a monotone voice. The attendant says “you’re handsome and strong with a good sense of humor.” The man smiles. Pretty soon he’s a celebrity. The line goes out the door. He finds something nice in everyone. He begins validating famous people. He validates Bush, Saddam and other world leaders. Everyone feels happy around him. The boss is sent down to fire him, but he in turn is validated and keeps him on. The attendant falls in love with the non-smiling photographer at the DMV. He visits daily, trying to get her to smile just once.

It’s all filmed in black and white and the credits list Kurt Kuenne all over them, so I want to give props to him. Taking a small, basically one-joke idea, and making it extremely compelling and cheer-inducing. Great work.

Fascinating short about an old woman, afraid of losing her memory, buys first one, then dozens of cameras to capture her life and help her remember things that happen. She ends up spending so much time editing her film that she doesn’t do any actual living. Says something about memory and our need to capture every waking moment as if it were full of importance. One of the best things I saw at Cinequest.

Incredibly creative Run Lola Run takeoff. A girl must get a receipt by 5 p.m. to return a $3,000 purse and save her tuition. A copy of the German film right down to the pulsing music and lime green pants, magenta hair, and black boots, except this time the guy is running. They do the photos showing the “what ifs”. Someone evil is trying to stop him from making it to the store in time. Great.
